america-makes-uammiThe Utah Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Initiative (UAMMI) recently announced its new membership in the America Makes additive manufacturing network.

America Makes is the nation’s leading and collaborative partner in additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing (3DP) technology research, discovery, creation, and innovation. Structured as a public-private partnership under the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, America Makes innovates and accelerates AM/3DP to increase the nation’s global manufacturing competitiveness.

Additive manufacturing is quickly becoming a major interest for many Utah advanced manufacturing companies.  Utah has a strong cluster of advanced materials and manufacturing companies, but many rely heavily on Department of Defense contracts for revenue.  Additive manufacturing (particularly 3D metal printing) allows these companies to expand into new service areas of interest to both defense and private sector customers.

As a member of America Makes, UAMMI receives access to many additive manufacturing experts from industry, academia, and government.  UAMMI also receives additive manufacturing technical and workforce data and will be invited to collaborate on various projects.  Through UAMMI, Utah companies will have access to these resources.

Regarding the membership, Jeff Edwards, UAMMI Executive Director said, “As the Utah advanced materials and manufacturing industry continues to evolve and grow, additive manufacturing is becoming a critical capability for the future.”

“We want our Utah companies to have as many opportunities for economic growth as possible and additive manufacturing is certainly a key one. We want to play any role we can to help Utah companies succeed in the future,” Edwards concluded.

Founded in 2014, and initially funded by the state of Utah, the Utah Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Initiative (UAMMI) brings together public, private, community, industry and education partners to assure growth and sustainability of Utah’s advanced materials and manufacturing industry and maintain Utah’s leadership in this key global industry.
